Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube Type: 

Sterile Container

 

Collection Information: 

Tissue, Tissue Biopsy

 

Transport Information: 

Avoid contaminating specimen with patient microbiata. Keep specimen moist with sterile saline. Put in a sterile container. Transport to the Laboratory immediately. A gram stain is routinely performed on this specimen type. If unusual, fastidious, or slow growing organisms are suspected, inform the Microbiology Laboratory. Be sure to comment if specific organisms are suspected. If tissue sonication is required, inform the Microbiology Laboratory. List specific anatomic site from which specimen was taken

 

Remarks: 

Identification and susceptibility tests are billed separately from culture.

 

Unacceptable Conditions: 

Specimen in a nonsterile container or formalin. For hard to collect specimens, consult with the Microbiology Manager before rejecting.

Methodology

Organism Identification is performed by biochemical test and/or Bruker MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry RUO Database. Organism sensitivities (AST) are performed as applicable using Broth Microdilution and/or Gradient diffusion strips using FDA approved methodology and CLSI guidelines.  Performance has been evaluated and verified by UnityPoint Health - Des Moines, Pathology Laboratory.
