Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube Type: 

Green (Lithium Heparin)
Lime Green (Heparin Plasma Separator Tube)
Red (No Additive)
SST (Serum Separator)

 

Preferred Collection Container: 

Green (Lithium Heparin)
Light Green (Heparin Plasma Separator Tube)

 

Also Acceptable Collection Container: 

Plasma from Lavender tubes is acceptable but will not route in the Laboratory Information System (Sunquest).

 

Transport Information: 

3.0 mL blood/1.0 mL serum or plasma. Additional volume is needed in certain circumstances where high concentrations of the analyte will require dilutions. (ie CF patients).

 

Minimum Sample Volume: 

0.5 mL blood/0.15 mL serum or plasma

 

Remarks: 

Trough levels should be drawn just before the next dose is given. Peak levels should be drawn 30 minutes after an I.V. administration or 60 minutes after an I.M. administration.
