Specimen Requirements

Raw Sputum (Sterile containter)

 

All specimens need to also be processed for an acid fast culture regardless of the molecular test results. 

 

NOTE: Raw sputum specimens must be evaluated for acceptability prior to processing.  If the specimen would be rejected as SPITT, the PCR should be rejected.

Stability

Raw Sputum:

Transport and store specimens at 2-8 °C before processing whenever possible.  If necessary, sputum specimens can be stored at a maximum of 35 °C for up to three days and then at 2-8 °C for an additional seven days.

 

Refrigerated Stability: 

7 days - Preferred

 

Ambient Stability: 

3 days
