Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube Type:
Sterile Container
Collection Information:
Sputum, Bronchial, Tracheal Specimens/Clean, Sterile Container
E-swabs are acceptable for nasal/sinus cultures.
For sputums, bronchial washings/lavages, endotracheal aspirates, the actual specimen is required.
Transport Information:
Aseptic technique must be used in obtaining, and transport of specimen.
Remarks:
Identification and susceptibility tests are billed separately from culture.
Unacceptable Conditions:
Sputum specimens, which consist of saliva are rejected. This is determined by the technologist after the gram stain is read. If received in a non-sterile container or more than 2 hours old. (Lab staff: consult with microbiology before rejection)

Methodology
Organism Identification is performed by biochemical test and/or Bruker MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry RUO Database. Organism sensitivities (AST) are performed as applicable using Broth Microdilution and/or Gradient diffusion strips using FDA approved methodology and CLSI guidelines. Performance has been evaluated and verified by UnityPoint Health - Des Moines, Pathology Laboratory.
