Specimen Requirements
Preferred Collection Container:
Copan ESwab
Also Acceptable Collection Container:
Sterile Swab with Amies (gel)
Sterile Swab with Liquid Stuart (gel or sponge)
Collection Information:
Note this test only screens for S. aureus. If additional organisms need to be identified, order Culture Respiratory (LAB2194/SQ CRESP)
1. Insert swab into the nostril until resistance is met at the level of the turbinates (approximately 1 inch into the nose)
2. Rotate the swab against the nasal mucosa
3. Repeat the process in the other nostril
Transport Information:
Send swab ambient to the laboratory.
Remarks:
Identification and susceptibility tests are billed separately from culture.

Methodology
Organism Identification is performed by biochemical test and/or Bruker MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry RUO Database. Organism sensitivities (AST) are performed as applicable using Broth Microdilution and/or Gradient diffusion strips using FDA approved methodology and CLSI guidelines. Performance has been evaluated and verified by UnityPoint Health - Des Moines, Pathology Laboratory.
