Specimen Requirements

Preferred Collection Container:

Collection Information: 

Aseptic technique must be used in obtaining, and transport of specimen. Place specimen in a clean sterile container and deliver to the lab immediately. 

 

Swabs are not encouraged except for specimens from the ear canal, nasopharynx,oral cavity, vagina, and cervix
 

Remarks: 

Identification and susceptibility tests are billed separately from culture.

 

Unacceptable Conditions: 

If received on a dry swab, in a non-sterile container. (Lab staff: consult with microbiology before rejection)

Stability

Refrigerate if processing is to be delayed for more than several hours with the following exceptions: Spinal fluid at room temperature; Dermatological specimens at 15-30 ° C.

Methodology

Organism Identification is performed by biochemical test and/or Bruker MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry RUO Database. Organism sensitivities (AST) are performed as applicable using Broth Microdilution and/or Gradient diffusion strips using FDA approved methodology and CLSI guidelines.  Performance has been evaluated and verified by UnityPoint Health - Des Moines, Pathology Laboratory.

Analytical time listed is the average time for a negative culture. Average analytical time may vary for positive, mixed, and complex cultures. Contact the lab for specific questions.
