Specimen Requirements

Container/Tube Type: 

Green No Gel (Lithium Heparin)
Light Green (Lithium Heparin Plasma Separator Tube)
Red (No Additive)
SST (Serum Separator)

Preferred Collection Container: 

Light Green (Lithium Heparin Plasma Separator Tube)

Also Acceptable Collection Container: 

Plasma from Lavender tubes is acceptable but will not route in the Laboratory Information System (Sunquest).

Collection Information: 

Do not use alcohol to prep venipuncture site!  Aqueous Zephiran (benzalkonium chloride), aqueous Merthiolate (thimerosal), or povidone-iodine should be used.  However there may be limited interference from isopropanol wipes.  

Minimum Sample Volume: 

0.5 mL

Remarks: 

Tubes of blood should be kept closed at all times. Tubes should be centrifuged ASAP.
