Specimen Requirements

Preferred Collection Container: 

No Microtainers
Pink (K2EDTA)

 

Also Acceptable Collection Container: 

4 mL full lavender for pediatrics.

Collection Information: 

Do not separate plasma from cells.

 

Transport Information: 

Whole blood/6 mL full PINK top EDTA preferred for adults.

 

Minimum Sample Volume: 

4 mL full lavender for pediatrics.

 

Remarks: 

Do not draw above an I.V. All patient identification on the tube label must be correct and must match the information on the requisition, and the patient's armband (hospital and/or Typenex). Immunohematology requires its own specimen separate from specimens submitted for testing to other Laboratory sections.

 

Unacceptable Conditions: 

All microtainers will be rejected. Frozen, gross hemolysis and serum separator gel tubes will be rejected. Not meeting collection, storage or transport requirements. Incomplete, inaccurate, or illegible labeling of specimens. Immunohematology will determine specimen acceptability.
